PROBLEM

As a subsidiary of EnBW, Yello Strom is one of the largest German energy companies. In 2016, the energy check app kWhapp was launched on the German app market for logging your own meter readings. It provides a quick and easy overview of your electricity and gas consumption. Initially, customers of all energy companies could still use the app, but in 2022 kWhapp became the Yello app and has been reserved for those customers ever since.

SOLUTION

In addition to maintaining the design system, I helped the kWhapp team to continuously optimize the user experience by analyzing different funnels with other UX/UI designers and developing the first low fidelity prototypes in close cooperation with designers, iOS and Android developers. I also designed the appropriate landing page, which generated almost 10% of the app's 1 million downloads. By 2022, around 120,000 users were using kWhapp every month with a high level of user satisfaction.

PRODUCT DESIGN + TESTING

Product managers, designers and developers worked agilely according to Scrum, so that new features as well as bugfixes could be implemented effectively. Every fortnight at the end of each sprint, new features were tested in an external or internal user test. I was involved in all phases of UX/UI design, from the preparation of a test to the evaluation and ideation of new functions. We continuously optimised the consumption and cost view and implemented a sales funnel within the app step by step with the aim of upselling specific customers to other Yello electricity or gas tariffs.

WEBDSIGN

Over the years, the corresponding landing page of kWhapp has become increasingly important for the total downloads of the app via the respective stores.

However, we also incorporated frequent user questions that we received via the app's contact form into a separate FAQ section on the landing page.

MARKETING ASSETS

In addition to realising specific design requirements, I was also responsible for creating marketing assets such as ads, the app store screens and setting up newsletters.
